Tamil Fonts, word processors, latest

It provides basic facilities for word processing both in Tamil and English. There are two versions of the word processor available. One with a spellchecker and a grammar-checker, and another without these. The word processor does not have any special file format. Files of both rich text format and text-only formats can be created or edited. Files of type “.doc” and “.pdf ” can be opened as a text files by converting them into text-only format. HTML files can be viewed with this word processor. E-mails can be sent using this word processor if the current system is connected with the SMTP server. Email attachments are also handled.

At Kamban we always believed in Unicode format and supported Unicode version since its inception in Year 2000. We provided free font resources to Linux developers and our popular Maduram, Kalyani and Kadambri fonts are packaged in many Linux versions. Now we have compiled a total of 10 different Unicode fonts along with four different keyboard Layouts for you. To check out these fonts and the Keyboard Layouts click here.

Discussion of Tamil Fonts

In this section, the reader is exposed to the variations seen in the fonts available for the Tamil Script. The desire to display text in Tamil on a web page had already set some pioneers on the job as early as 1992. For a variety of reasons, the developers of fonts for Tamil did not envisage a need for some minimal standardization, which resulted in totally different approaches to using the fonts on a computer, each approach based on the specific aspect of each font.

The purpose of this page is to illustrate the variations and also explain why most of them including the standard proposed at Tamilnet-99 have serious limitations for computing with Tamil. Viewers may want to review the section on Desirable set of characters for Printing and Display of Tamil texts to better appreciate the points made in this section. It must be kept in mind that these fonts have been designed primarily for display and printing of text using special font dependent applications for data entry. Consequently none of them can be used meaningfully for linguistic text processing in a straight forward manner.

Installing and Using Tamil fonts

Firefox Users:

If you face trouble viewing in Firefox do the following:

Go to Tools ->Options ->Content-> Advanced and Enable the Check the box saying '
'Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above'' and select OK

For Linux Operating System:

Copy one of the Tamil fonts file from Tamil Fonts(but we recommend Lohit-Tamil font) to .fonts directory in the user's home directory. If .fonts directory does not exist in the home directory, please create it. Finally run the command 'fc-cache' from the command prompt.

It is very important to restart the browser, only then you will be able to read the content in Tamil.

Mac Users:

We recommend Users to use Mac OS X 10.4/Tiger/Leopard and Safari 2.0/Safari 3.0.

Users have to remove the fonts that are copied over from Windows. Safari on Mac OS substitutes the default fonts when the specified font is not available.

iPhone :

Unfortunately iPhone doesn't support any Indian Unicode fonts. We are as eager as you to make our language channels iPhone compatible.
